163816 – Evolution of Drilling and Completions in the Slave Point to Optimize Economics

Summary

This paper details the technological evolution of drilling and completion practices in the Evi and Otter oil fields in northern Alberta. Originally, these plays were targeted with vertical wells, with only minimal success. Since horizontal multistage fracturing technology has been implimented, operators have been able to improve flow capacity and recoveries to allow for commercial development from previously uneconomical zones. The paper focuses on 49 horizontal wells drilled in Slave Point since 2008 and the technologies that have made them profitable.
