Drilling of horizontal wells on land has increased steadily over the last few years in China. In the Changling gas field, a low porosity and low permeability formation, wells have typically been drilled vertically and completed with cemented casing. Production results from these wells were not promising and most wells have experienced a rapid decline once coming on production. This paper discusses the successful completion of a pilot experimental open hole horizontal well using an innovative multistage fracturing system and new design workflow for optimization of fracturing treatment execution. This well was a milestone for the operator in China, being the most number of stages completed for a horizontal well in a tight gas formation and the most proppant and fracture fluid volume successfully pumped by first time application of a precise continuous mixer.
