Packers Plus Energy Services is pleased to announce the recent development of the Inferno Ball-Activated Steam Valve for Devon Energy, which improved project economics by enhancing steam distribution along the lateral in steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) operations while reducing operational cost and risk.

The Advanced Reservoir Management Systems (ARMS™) group within Packers Plus collaborated with Devon Energy to develop the Inferno technology, and after three consecutive successful field trial runs, the operator has installed the valves in seven additional wells. The ARMS team is well-equipped with the expertise to solve complex completions issues in a variety of applications worldwide.

The Inferno’s internal sliding sleeve removes the requirement to kill the well and cool the reservoir to run coiled tubing into the well for initial sleeve activation. This technology also enables uniform steam distribution throughout the lateral with adjustable nozzles and erosion resistant valves which can be open and closed multiple times.

“We enjoyed working with Packers Plus to bring conventional technology to the SAGD market,” says Pat Webb, Completions Engineer at Devon Energy. “The successful field trials improved efficiency and lowered risk compared to the existing method. Collaborating to adapt existing technology for use in SAGD is key in propelling the industry forward in a positive way.”
